At
the fair I saw an elephant. Five dollars for a ride. On her back the
kids were yelling, squirming and kicking as children do while she simply
plodded round her small circle. Every day for a week or two she'll do
the same, then she'll be loaded into a truck to move on to the next
fair. Was she born into this life? Maybe she was rescued from an abusive
situation. Perhaps she's retired from circus performance. Does she
dream of the jungles of India or is she old and tired and content to
simply do this. I'll never know, but I can admire her dignity and
respect her grace to accept life as it is.
